Pop quiz: Name that Shel Silverstein book! (If you said "Giraffe and a Half" You're right!)
It's true though, I feel like my wagon is draggin'. I always feel like this after a busy weekend, and admittedly with grocery shopping, a Giant's game (let's go Giants!) and a concert (Florence + the Machine were AMAZING), this weekend was pretty packed!
Right now, I feel like I can't get enough sleep. I keep waking up early, like around 7:30, when I don't even have to wake up until 8:30 and don't really need to be out of bed until 9! Then, once I'm up, I just want to go BACK to sleep!
I'm also starving ALL THE TIME. I can't seem to get the food in my mouth fast enough. And then I'm hungry again 45 minutes later! And of course, I'm super picky about what I want to eat. No hamburger. No Indian food. No cheese, unless cheese is what I want. Then I usually want fresh mozzarella or the grated cheese on my baked potato. Or cottage cheese. Baked potatoes. If I could eat baked potatoes with broccoli, cheese and sour cream for every meal, I would! I baked 10 potatoes this weekend, just so I could eat them for lunch!
Mostly though, I'm tired and have zero energy to do anything. I'm looking forward to next week when I can stay in bed or on the couch all day and sleep! Yay to the end of the school year! Looking forward to the day when I have more energy...

My Eggo Is Preggo Food Edition:Breakfast
So, in future, I will try to take pictures of the food before I eat it. However, once I get the food prepared, it seems that it cannot get in my mouth fast enough. So pictures are always an after thought...
Note: I am supposed to eat eggs. However, I hate all eggs except those that are poached. Still figuring out this dilemma.
Breakfast item #1 Smoothie
I need to eat a smoothie EVERY SINGLE DAY. Preferably within 15 minutes of waking. Or my stomach explodes. No lie. Here is my current favorite smoothie recipe:
Peach-Pineapple-Banana Smoothie
Ingredients:
-frozen peaches (about 1/2 cup)
-frozen pineapple (about 1/2 cup)
-fresh banana
-1/2 cup whole fat plain yogurt
-1 cup juice (I like Dynamo with Calcium from Trader Joe's)
Combine peaches and pineapple in a microwave safe bowl. Nuke for 1 minute. This will make the smoothie smoother and not so cold. Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
Real tough, right? But it tastes like happy and gets food in my system asap.
For breakfast/lunch today, I created something that I am hoping will stay in my tummy and be pretty stable. Plus it was super yummy.
Cottage Cheese-Fruit Bowl
Ingredients:
-Cottage Cheese
-Fruit (I got fresh blueberries at the store this morning, yum!)
-Corn Flakes
Put cottage cheese in a bowl. Toss in a handful of blueberries. Eat a few. Toss in some more. Fight with Brian to regain control of the blueberries when he steals the entire box. Collect blueberries that he then tosses down your cleavage (that conveniently collect in your bra). Finally finish putting blueberries into the bowl. Top with a handful of corn flakes (that might be left over from making meatloaf last week). Consume.
If you're lucky, I might actually get some pics of these tomorrow and post them here. Or not. I might just devour it as quickly as possible.

Officially 6 weeks, 1 day!
I had my first doctor's appointment this morning! Of course, it was early and I had run out of frozen fruit for my smoothie and didn't have enough time to make anything, so I ran out of the house with a packet of applesauce and tummy full of vitamins. Bad idea. I pretty much wanted to puke my entire appointment!
But, onto my appointment. I had an ultrasound--we are officially 6 weeks and 1 day (plus or minus a few days). Everything seems to be going well. It's pretty tiny. Just a little blob. But it was a blinking blob, so that's good!
The doctor said that, since I have had two miscarriages already, we are treating this pregnancy AGGRESSIVELY! Which means everyday I will be taking:
-Prenatal vitamins every day
-4000 i.u. Vitamin D
-Calcium
-Baby Aspirin
-Fish Oil
-Folgard
-hormone suppositories (twice a day)
-injecting (yes, with a needle) Lovenox into my tummy
Once you get all the structural reasons for miscarriage out of the way, the two main causes of miscarriage is overactive blood clotting and overactive immune system. By taking these, I will slightly suppress my immune system and slightly suppress my coagulation.
Next Friday, I see the midwife!

Hope Springs Eternal
Apparently, I'm not really great at that NOT HOPING stuff. While I would love to just go with the flow, and if this pregnancy works out, great; otherwise, it is what it is, and maybe it won't work out. Yeah, just like I can't not plan and make charts and stuff, when blasted with a million "You Are Pregnant" signs, I can't help but hope.
My boobs are crazy tender--more so than ever before. I am ridiculously tired. All. The. Time. I woke up, went to the bathroom, checked some stuff out on my phone and was like, "You know, I think I just need to lie here a while, because getting up seems like a lot of effort." Even typing this makes me a little tired. And, hello nausea, my old friend. Although, I have to say, I hope this friend stays around a while, you know, like for the entire first trimester.

Wait...What? What?! How did THAT happen???
So, I've been pretty frustrated these last few weeks waiting for my period to start. I want it to start so I can begin charting again in earnest. I've been keeping track of my waking temperatures...sorta. I misplaced my thermometer for a few days. Then I went to Sacramento for my sister in law, Melissa's, wedding shower and I was sharing a room with my other sister in law, Stephanie. Since we're trying to keep this journey a secret for now, I didn't take my temp then either. I started back up and promptly lost the thermometer again (it keeps falling behind our bed and it is really hard to get it back!)
Anyway, I've been semi-charting, but no period. I'd gone through an entire month--47 days, including when I was on my period after I miscarried before--with nothing. Then in the last week or so, I'd noticed my nipples were getting sensitive. I figured this was a precursor to getting my period. Some people get that. Then in the last day or so my stomach has been feeling a little wonky. Kinda nauseous, kind a hungry. So I picked up a pregnancy test, just to see. I felt like I was wasting money--it was a $10 CVS test, not one of my Dollar Tree cheapies--but I didn't want to be stressing about this. As I said before, it's the hoping that hurts. I didn't want to hope. I wanted to have what I knew, that I wasn't pregnant, confirmed.
Well, I was wrong.
My first response was "You are SHITTING me!"
#1 I didn't even think you COULD get pregnant that soon. Don't you need to, you know, build up the uterine lining for something even to stick?
#2 I didn't think it was even biologically possible for us to get pregnant. We weren't TRYING to get pregnant, so we were using alternate methods of birth control. (Apparently they're right when they say "pulling out" is not a good method of BC). So apparently, it is not impossible. Just not probable.
Of course, in the past month I have:
-drunk a fair amount of wine
-eaten smoked salmon a couple of times
-eaten seared tuna
-eaten at least one poached egg (read, uncooked yolk) a day
-Taken a fair amount of Nyquil for my cold
-Had a fever (of 99.9)
There's a part of me saying "Hey, third time's the charm, right?" Another part of me saying, well, It's only been a month since the miscarriage. Anything can happen right now. I'm going to continue taking my vitamins (I'm now doubling the amount of Vitamin D I've been taking), eat the right foods, and take it easy. But I am NOT going to hope.
But, they do say third time's the charm...

Glucometer?!
Today I went to see our midwife, Rosanna, for a fertility consultation. Not that I have a problem with fertility. Heck, I've managed to get pregnant twice in 5 months! I'd say that's pretty damn good :) However, I seem to have a problem with getting the baby to stick.
It was a great and pretty successful meeting as far as I'm concerned. First off, it totally reinforces our decision to use this midwife. She is really awesome. I get such a great vibe--not hippy dippy at all, just calm, patient and above all practical.
So, here is what I found out:
1. Our current diet is great. We're doing all the right things. Eating lots of eggs, fruits, vegetables and proteins. Although I should cut back on the carbs :( I love carbs.
2. Take Vitamin D supplements. Most people have a Vitamin D deficiency and it's super important for a developing fetus.
3. Take Calcium/Magnesium supplements. Most people don't get enough of that, either.
4. Monitor my blood sugar level with a glucometer. Apparently, when she suggested this, my eyes bugged out a bit. Probably the idea of poking myself with a needle several times a day! I just need to do this for one or two days. We need to see how much my blood sugar level fluctuates. Extreme blood sugar level fluctuations can also cause miscarriages.
Rosanna also lent me some reading material: The course materials for a pregnancy nutrition course and the book Real Food for Mother and Baby-The Fertility Diet, Eating for Two and Baby's First Foods by Nina Planck. I'm really looking forward to going through these this weekend.
Right now, I've got a bright and optimistic outlook for the next few months. I'll read the materials, make some dietary changes if necessary, make sure I'm exercising more regularly (or, you know, at all!) and just enjoy my summer. Then, come August, we should be ready to start again! I'm hoping third time's the charm!

One Week Later
Ok, so maybe 1 week and a few days later. It's taken a while for me to formulate my thoughts enough to write this out.
One week (+ a few days) ago, I miscarried. I can't believe it's only been a week. It feels so much longer.
Some days, I'm okay. In fact, most days I'm okay. My days are busy--filled with work, planning, spending time with my dogs and Brian. Some days, I'm even great. Sunday was a great day. I spent the day in my bathing suit, in the backyard with my first mojito of the season, reading books and taking naps on a blanket in the sun.
Some days, I'm not okay. Some days, I feel like it can't be real. It was a horrible horrible dream and I'll wake up and still be pregnant. Some days, I forget and think that soon I'll be breaking the news to our parents. I think about how excited they'll be, the look on their faces. I've carefully planned out how we're going to tell them. It's something I'm really looking forward to. Then I remember that it did really happen and it is real. And I won't be breaking any news to them any time soon.
Some days, it's bad. It seems like I see pregnant women everywhere. At the farmer's market and the grocery store. When I'm picking up my students from school. I'll watch an episode of one of my favorite tv shows and they'll be talking about pregnancy or being pregnant or babies (Damn you Gray's Anatomy). And then I'll cry. Because it's not fair. I shouldn't have to do this twice. I shouldn't have to watch and wait for the "tissue to be expelled" (which happened last Sunday). These are not good days.
But mostly, I have good days. These are the days I focus on. These are the days that I think and plan for next time. Next time, I'll take more vitamins. Next time, I'll be more careful. But until next time, I will drink my mojitos. I will eat sushi and raw oysters. I will ride my bike (really, I will!) and go to yoga on Thursday mornings. I will enjoy these next three months. And then we'll start again.
