The Cat's Out of the Bag!

Yep. I couldn't wait any longer. Of course, there's a bit of backstory to this.

We were planning on telling next weekend. We were going to Skype my mom in the morning, then have my dad and stepmom and Brian's parents come over in the afternoon/evening for a BBQ. I had these super cute cards: one said Grandmothers and one said Grandfathers with a cute saying--they looked almost hand made. Then I was going to put a copy of our ten week ultrasound in it with a note saying delivery due February 1st! I had it all planned out. Then...tragedy struck.

Brian's grandfather "Pop Pop" passed away last week. It was, for us, very unexpected. He'd been diagnosed with Parkinson's a few years back and he and Gramma Lou had moved from their home in Truckee down to Victorville to be nearer Brian's aunts and cousins. All of Brians aunts, uncles and cousins--not to mention his grandparents' relatives and friends--converged on Victorville this weekend for the funeral and celebration of life reception to celebrate Pop Pop.

Brian and I talked a lot about sharing the news this weekend on the 7 hour drive down. Is this the right time? Would it be appropriate? We didn't want to take away from the celebration of Pop Pop's life, but when else were we going to have an opportunity when all of his family would be together? We decided to wait and see what the feeling was.

The funeral was beautiful and sad--my first Catholic mass. Brian's dad Jeff gave a moving speech, as a he usually does (Jeff is an amazing speaker). By the end, there was not a dry eye in the church. Mine certainly weren't.

After the ceremony, we converged on Gramma Lou and Pop Pop's home--the first time we had been to their house in Victorville. At one point, we had Brian, his parents Barbara and Jeff, his sisters Mel and Stephanie and Gramma Lou sitting together in the living room. We had been reminiscing about Pop Pop, talking about Mel and Travis' upcoming wedding, our good friend Sandi's new baby and babies in general. The vibe seemed perfect. I pulled out the "Grandfather" card and handed it to Jeff and Barbara.

Of course they had to sit there and guess why I had given him a card, as it wasn't anyone's birthday or holiday. Mel was grinning and saying that she thought she knew what the card was about. I'm pretty sure at one point, I said "just open it!" I think they got as far as seeing the word "grandfather" on the front, looked inside, saw the words "coming soon" and they were jumping up and down and laughing. Once hugs were given all around, they read the card again, saw the February 1st due date--which is actually rather close to Pop Pop's birthday. Barbara ran into the other room to share the news then rushed back to hear more details. It definitely seemed to raise some spirits!

The first thing I told everyone is "Nothing on Facebook! I haven't told my parents yet!" The next morning, I called my dad early--I knew he'd be up! I told him about Pop Pop and the funeral and shared the big news with him. He was saddened to hear about Pop Pop's passing, but was excited about the baby. Then I called mom. Having known about the past two miscarriages, she was cautiously optimistic, especially after I told her how far along we are and the steps the doctor is taking to make sure this pregnancy has the best possible chance of succeeding.

So the news is out! I'm waiting to post on Facebook until I call my grandma and Brian's aunt and uncle. Brian and I are back home from Victorville. It was a long, exciting, sad and emotional weekend and we are happy to be home with our puppies!

9 Weeks!

We're at 9 weeks! How exciting is that? I feel like I've reached some sort of milestone. It's not the end of the first trimester, but the end is in sight!

How far along: 9 Weeks
Weight: 162.2 lbs
Baby size: approx .9 in. About the size of a green olive
Sleep: Good. Still peeing at night. Waking up earlier and earlier. But also taking daily 1 hour naps during the afternoon/evening.
Movement: Nothing yet!
Feeling: Exhausted. Not so nauseated this week. I started putting a stick of string cheese by my bed at night, so I can eat it first thing in the morning. That has helped. I went 2 whole days without puking, so that's a plus!
What I miss: My energy level. It's just so hard to get stuff done! I feel like I'm constantly stopping to rest! This was my first week of summer camp, too, which makes it even harder!
What I am looking forward to: The big reveal is next weekend! We're calling my mom on Skype, then inviting Brian's parents and my Dad and step mom Janet over for a BBQ to tell them the big news!
Milestone: Made my first foray into maternity clothing! Bought the BeBand this week (which would work much better if my tummy wasn't so itchy from the Lovenox injections!) and two maternity bras. I've gone from a 36B to a 38C!
To Do: Not much this week. Schedule an appointment with the doctor, tell the parents next weekend.
Food Cravings: Fruit! Watermelon, strawberries, plums, peaches, apricots, gotta love them all! Also, plain greek yogurt and steak. I can barely stomach chicken right now and most fish makes me want to gag :( We're trying pork tenderloin tonight. We'll see how it goes.

No picture today. Didn't go to the doctor this week. Sad for you! Tune in next week for week 10 ultrasound!

FEED ME!!!

It still disturbs me how much food I need to eat. I was never a picky eater before. I'll eat just about anything, and have seconds, too! But now, now I am both a picky eater, but I can't stop eating!

Here's a fun little eating schedule for today, just to get an idea:
8:30 am- 1/2 cup plain yogurt with brown sugar, 1/2 waffle and a mango-pineapple smoothie
9:30 am- bits of fruit at the farmer's market. Probably the equivalent of a plum or so
11:30 am- 2 steak tacos, a little bit of beans and a few chips I stole from Brian
1:30 pm- 1 cup greek yogurt mixed with fresh sliced strawberries and brown sugar
5:00 pm- 1(large) zucchini, steamed, with melted cheese
8:30 pm- tomato-mussel bouillabaisse with bread

Plus, plenty of strawberries and yogurt covered almonds throughout the afternoon and early evening. This doesn't even include dessert.

So not big meals, but a lot of them!

Now let's talk about the picky part. I've never had much use or patience for picky eaters. Like I said, normally I'll eat just about anything--except hot dogs and bologna. Now. Well now I have a list of things I won't or shouldn't eat:
-sausage
-ham
-roast chicken
-eggs
-salami (which I actually love but gives me heartburn AND makes me want to puke afterwards)
-bread (again, I love but shouldn't eat too much of)
-tea and coffee (no caffeine)
-shrimp
-most fish (but not sushi)
-hamburger

Note that most of the stuff on there is protein. Stuff I should be shoveling in to my mouth. Instead, it makes me want to yak. Yay me. Fortunately, I am loving fruit, veggies, cheese and yogurt. That pretty much makes up most of what I'm eating these days. And my vitamins. Lots and lots of vitamins!

I Have to Wear a What????

The day has come. My pants, they no longer fit quite right. To put it bluntly, I can no longer button them! Since the baby is about the size of a raspberry, I can't quite say it's the growing baby that's doing this to me. And my weight is the same as it was two weeks ago, when my pants fit. I'm pretty sure I have entered...

The Bloat Zone (doo doo doo do! doo doo doo do!)

All silliness aside though, it's true. My pants no longer fit in the waist. My shirts are all still fine, thankfully. I'm hoping to put off most of my maternity shopping until August, when I really hit the 2nd trimester. However today I made my first foray into maternity wear.

With the advice of many pregnant ladies before me, I picked up a BeBand.
I assure you, it's way cuter on this model than it is on me!
However, despite how not cute it is, it is hidden under my t-shirts and tank tops and--most important--I can sit with my pants unbuttoned and be comfortable (and decent). Apparently, I can also wear it throughout the pregnancy and post pregnancy, too. Not bad for $16!

I did take a few looks in the maternity wear department, just to get ready for what I'm going to buy come August!

8 Weeks!

We've made it to 8 weeks! Only 4 more to go before I can make the big announcement. Best news, my doctor says it's looking really good. The baby was moving--MOVING!--inside my uterus! That was pretty cool to see it wiggling around. Brian looked at the picture and called it a "slimer" a la Ghostbusters. Nice, right?

How far along: 8 weeks, 1 day
Weight: 163 lbs
Baby size: 1.89 cm. About the size of a raspberry
Sleep: Good. Still peeing at night.
Movement: Not that I can feel, but I saw it moving on the ultrasound
Feeling: Exhausted and nauseated. I've pretty much been throwing up every morning/day
What I miss: The feeling of not being nauseated. I was prescribed Zofran for the nausea, I haven't filled the prescription yet, though. I'm waiting to see how I feel. I also miss real raw fish sushi.
What I am looking forward to: Telling people, feeling better.
Milestone: Made it to 8 weeks! Over halfway done with the first trimester!
To Do: Blood Tests and Genetic Screening. I don't have to go to the doctor next week, so that's nice.
Food Cravings: Watermelon. Cottage Cheese. Iced water with lemon.

7 Weeks!

We've made it to 7 weeks! This is the furthest along I've been. I keep feeling like I just have to get past this next week, and while I won't be home free, I'll feel a lot more secure.

How far along: 7 weeks, 1 day
Weight: 165 lbs
Baby size: 1.11 cm. About the size of a blueberry
Sleep: Good. Although I've been waking up at night to pee.
Movement: No movement, but I do feel twinges and stuff going on.
Feeling: Tired. Exhausted. All the time. It took me 3 days to do  the laundry. One to wash and dry, one to fold and one to put everything away! Nauseous. I have to eat ASAP in the morning, and then, like, every 45 minutes! So yeah, starving too. But I've also been throwing up. And crazy sensitive nipples.
What I miss: My energy level. Not throwing up.
What I am looking forward to: Telling everyone. I'm going to be seeing a lot of people this weekend and I'm going to try really hard to keep this secret!
Milestone: Positive pregnancy test!
To Do: I've got my first "real" midwife visit tomorrow. Then another doctor's appointment next Thursday. He wants me to come in every week so we can check on our little blob. Because that's what it looks like at this point!
Food Cravings: Baked potatoes ALL THE TIME. Fruit. TJ's peach popsicles. SO GOOD!

Gratuitous sonogram picture. Eventually you'll get pictures of me, but right now I just feel kinda fat. So no pictures for you!
